Recycled Chewing Gum Gives These Shoes Serious Sole

first_imgLet us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. Stay on target Walk around city sidewalks and streets long enough and eventually you’re going to step in someone’s discarded chewing gum. The stuff is everywhere, and it’s notoriously annoying to clean up.And just what the heck can you do with bags and bags of ABC gum once it’s been scraped up, anyway? A London company has turned it into the sturdy sole for a pair of limited edition shoes. The Gumshoe (see what they did there?) is a collaboration among Gumdrop Limited, the destination marketers at I Amsterdam and Explicit Gear. Two colors are being offered, the subdued black and a very loud pink. The chunky sole on both features a map of the Netherlands’ capital city — which just happens to be where the actual gum used to make the shoes’ Gum-tec soles was collected.Unconfirmed footage of gum being collected for Gum-tec solesThere’s plenty of raw material in the Netherlands that can be used to create a product like Gum-tec. According to the Gumshoe site, roughly 1.5 million kilograms (about 1650 tons) of gum winds up as litter every year. Here in the U.S. there’s an even larger supply. That seems like a huge figure, until you consider that in the U.S. an estimated 250,000 tons gets tossed.Gumdrop has come up with a whole range of products made from Gum-tec. They’ve made rubber balls, pencils, erasers, rulers, frisbees, lunch boxes and guitar picks. There’s even a Gum-tec comb, which is probably the only way you would ever intentionally put gum in your hair.Gumdrop can make all of the items it produces in just about any color you can imagine. Pink just happens to be a fun way to highlight the fact that they’re made from gumOh, and here’s another fun fact about Gum-tec items. According to Gumdrop, they retain that unmistakable chewing gum smell (presumably the cotton candy-ish pink stuff, like Dubble Bubble).center_img Star Wars x Adidas Ultraboost Photos Have LeakedBest Sneakers of Summer 2019 last_img read more
