Turkey 2013: Ghana Vs USA

first_imgMany Ghanaians will find the position of the Black Satellites going into their final round of Group A match against Uncle Sam’s boys as incomprehensible. For a side that came second to Egypt at the African Championships in Algeria a some months ago, the addition of the foreign quartet of Frank Acheampong, Richmond Boakye-Yiadom, Baba Abdul Rahman and Alfred Duncan was to further enhance the strength in depth of the squad. The manager was to be spoilt for choice and for an experienced head like him, pick the very best from the lot to face of the threat of Spain, France and U.SA. Ghanaians were excited about the prospects of seeing the next generation of Black Star players in action. Buoy has everything gone bust. Four goals conceded and just a single goal to show for was the least anyone expected. It is difficult to tell what hit the team in their two games against the French and the Spaniards at the Turk Telekom Arena. Naturally, criticism would center on the coaches game plan and how he has responded to the tactics of his opponents. We lost to the French after holding them to a 0-0 scoreline after halftime. Monsieur Pierre Mankowski clearly identified some flaws in our game and mapped out the right strategy to beat us. As for the Spaniards, we all knew how they were going to play and they did not disappoint. Coach Tetteh at the press conference before the game seemed to have something up his sleeve for Julen Lupetegui’s side but try as we did as a team, nothing really worked. We created clear cut scoring chances but could not take them. Assifuah had a good shout for a penalty which was unfortunately waived away by referee Ben Williams of Australia. The game against the Americans is an all or nothing occasion for both teams as a stalemate will be of little use to either when it comes to determining the four best third-place finishers. USA will have the wind in their sails after equalising late on in their 1-1 draw with France.Satellites striker Boakye-Yiadom spoke to the JOY Sports team here in Kayseri and is confident that the side can still make it despite being in this unfortunate position.“We’re feeling down. It’s disappointing for a team like Ghana to lose the first two matches, adopting a refreshingly open and honest tone. “But each and every player is utterly determined to achieve something for our country. Provided we win our final group match, we still have a chance of going through.”. The ruthless finisher, who is on the books at Juventus but spent last season on loan to Sassuolo and contributed 11 goals as the club won promotion to Italy’s Serie A for the first time, picks his words carefully but with unmistakable intent. We just have to work even harder. If you want to make it to the top, you have to give more than 100 per cent.“I’m telling the lads we mustn’t let our heads go down,” he continued. “We have everything we need to be successful. The senior players now have to give a lead to the younger ones, and make sure we’re mentally up for it.” It will be no easy task, as the young Ghanaians have in fact played very good football at times in Turkey, but with no discernible reward. Both in the 3-1 defeat to France and a reverse to Spain by the only goal of the game, the Africans piled pressure on their opponents for a full half of each match.Boakye, scorer of his side’s solitary goal in Turkey so far, regards the previous generation captained by Andre Ayew as role models. “They’re our inspiration. We have huge respect for what they achieved. Their triumph was historic, and we’ve basically come here to repeat it,” said the 20-year-old. “It’s not too late yet and we still believe in ourselves.”Possible Starting X1-Ghana: Antwi,Attamah,Rahman,Lartey,Nketia,Salifu,Odjer,Duncan,Aboagye,Boakye-Yiadom, Acheampong.
