8 dead in 2 separate road accidents in Hooghly

first_imgKolkata: As many as eight persons were killed and 11 others injured in two separate road accidents that took place in Hooghly district on Friday night.The first mishap occurred on Assam Link Road near Dumurdaha bus stand when a speeding vehicle mowed down 11 persons who were taking part in a procession arranged for the immersion of idols. The vehicle overturned soon after it hit them. Out of the total 11 persons, five were declared brought dead after being rushed to a Chinsurah Imambara Hospital. Six others are undergoing treatment at a local hospital some of whom had suffered critical injuries. According to the police, a local club took out its Durga idol immersion procession along the Assam Link Road in Hooghly when a speeding car hit them. The driver of the vehicle applied emergency brakes but failed to stop the vehicle. The locals rushed the injured persons to the hospital. After being informed, the cops reached the spot and started an investigation. The officers are probing if the driver was in a drunken state at the time of the accident. Three persons including the driver of the Toto were killed and five others injured. The truck driver fled the spot immediately after the accident while the helper was beaten up by the irate mob. He was later rescued by the police. The local residents staged protests. Police officers resorted to mild lathi charge to disperse the mob. The injured persons were taken to a local hospital. Police said the speeding truck was going towards Bandel from Hooghly when the accident took place near Katwa Gate. Police are conducting raids to nab the truck driver who had been at large since the incident occurred.last_img
